New to Kirkwood in 2007, Hardy Washington Jr., a State Farm agent, connected with organizations that would provide a community for his family. The YMCA was top of his list thanks to a past experience coaching his son's basketball team. The Kirkwood Family YMCA proved to be a nucleus in the area, he says, and his involvement has grown to being chairman of the board today.

"It comes down to the basic premise that the YMCA truly changes lives," he says. "I've seen the benefits from all the various contributions we put toward those who may not be able to afford to go. I've seen what they've done internationally and what they do here in this community. The Y is everywhere."

Hardy is also a member of the Lamplighter Society, which recognizes individuals who remember the Y in their estate plans, make an outright gift to the YMCA endowment fund or establish a planned gift. Hardy will leave a portion of a life insurance policy to the Kirkwood YMCA.

"I just think it's a great opportunity," he says. "We give back where we're living. When you're gone, it's a legacy. That's what I really want to leave. That portion will help the Y, which will help someone."

Hardy hopes to spread the word about the Lamplighters to increase participation.

"If we can get enough members and employees who are putting into Lamplighters, it's amazing what that can do years and years after the good Lord has called you home," he says.
